While dealing with contract issues with each of their top three receivers, the San Francisco 49ers have had a busy summer at wide receiver, picking rookies Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing. Slot receiver Jauan Jennings’ contract extension predicament was on wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s mind until the organization re-upped him to a two-year deal earlier last week. Even though veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel has a contract until 2025, trade speculations around him were persistent before to the 2024 NFL Draft.
However, the organization temporarily put an end to such discussions before Day 2 of the draft began. Did those rumors about a deal come to pass, and how did Samuel respond to the information?
Yes, I did hear it, Samuel said on Tuesday. Had a discussion about it with my agent. They were alternating between them and whoever it was. At first, that was an issue, but we have now gone past it.
Thus, the reason we are here is to improve. Samuel is reportedly aware of the circumstances and the nature of the business, but he will remain a 49er through the 2024 season because no trade was eventually made possible.
The 49ers made the decision not to restructure or alter the wideout’s deal this summer, giving the organization options going into the next offseason, when trade talks involving Samuel are expected to resurface and have an even greater likelihood of happening.
With the chance that the 2024 season may be his final one with the 49ers, how is Samuel approaching the year? “In the end, the agreement was executed,” stated Samuel. “We just paid attention to this year, and I know what I signed up for.” Prior to the 2022 season,
Samuel had inked a three-year contract deal worth $71 million after having an incredible All-Pro performance in which he served as San Francisco’s primary option while playing a varied role.
But as time went on, the offense changed, with outstanding route runner Brandon Aiyuk assuming a larger volume role.
As a result, the 49ers had to make a tough choice regarding the receiver room. For the time being, it seems the 49ers will try to make the most of their final season with this group of receivers before making any difficult choices the next offseason.
