What Slater told Cobbo amid rumoured Origin rift
NRL 2024: What Billy Slater said to Selwyn Cobbo amid Maroons rift
Billy Slater has revealed what was said in a phone call to Selwyn Cobbo amid a reported rift between the pair ahead of Origin III.
The rift between the pair was made public last Monday by Nine’s Danny Weidler, who reported members of the Maroons coaching staff were offside with Cobbo.
Slater on Tuesday in his final press conference before the match said the reports were “fake news”.
Speaking on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show, Slater revealed Cobbo had called him to clear the air.
“Selwyn called me because his family were calling him about it,” Slater said.
“I just told him ‘mate, just relax, we’re good, we’re good’.
“He’s in a great place, Selwyn. He’s a great young man.”
Cobbo was picked on the bench in game one, but was dropped entirely for game two. Slater on Sunday said he “wasn’t quite ready”.
“But he was all-in for game three, and he’s going to be a wonderful player for a long time for Queensland.”
Cobbo had a quiet night on the Maroons wing, making just 77m from 13 runs.
