FINAL ERA: Cowboys WR shocks both NFL and the entire AT&T Arena with an unexpected retirement at 28, and explains his decision.

Michael Gallup, a former wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday. The 28-year-old signed a one-year contract with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this offseason. The move is expected to become official on Wednesday. The Denver product was selected by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft and played all six seasons in Dallas. In 2019, Gallup was second on the team in targets (113), catches (66), receiving yards (1,107), and receiving touchdowns (6).

But after a strong sophomore season, Gallup’s output has been declining. The last four seasons have seen a decline in his receiving yards. Despite participating in all 17 regular season games, Gallup only saw 57 targets and 418 receiving yards last year—both career lows.

Gallup’s injured ACL during the 2021 season was a big blow to his career. Gallup was nonetheless paid well by the Cowboys in the offseason that followed, but his explosiveness on the field has since been significantly reduced due to the injury. With 266 career receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns, Gallup wraps up his playing days.
