Breaking: The End of the Road… Despite a Relentless Onslaught from the Bucks Star

Greece eliminated from Olympics despite one more great showing from Giannis Antetokounmpo

Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has been personally tormenting top countries throughout the men’s basketball competition in the 2024 Paris Olympics, but his journey ended early Tuesday when Greece was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Germany, 76-63.

Antetokounmpo scored 22 points with three assists to lead Greece, which took a 21-11 lead against unbeaten Germany in the first quarter but watched the lead disintegrate thereafter. Greece still led, 47-42, with just more than 5 minutes left in the third quarter, but the Germans went on a 17-5 run to close the period.

Germany, which went 3-0 in pool play, advanced to the semifinals against France or Canada.

The Greeks, who went 1-2 in pool play, had to sweat out the tiebreaker to reach the quarterfinals, needing Serbia to defeat South Sudan by three or more points in the last game of group play; Serbia won, 96-85, giving Greece the eighth and final spot in the bracket.

The United States, including Oshkosh’s Tyrese Haliburton and former Bucks player Jrue Holiday, will face Brazil at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in another quarterfinal, with the winner facing Serbia or Australia — a team Greece defeated in pool play. The semifinals are Thursday with the final Saturday.

Greece qualified for the Olympics for the first time since 2008. Antetokounmpo finished the four games averaging 28.2 points and shooting 68% from the floor and 67% at the free-throw line.

NBA player Franz Wagner scored 18 points to lead Germany, and Dennis Schröder scored 13 off the bench with eight assists.
