Fiji 7s Set for Overhaul: Olympic Review Promises Major Changes and Strategic Revival
Fiji Rugby Union’s Chief Executive, Rovereto Nayacalevu, has indicated that a conclusion on the Fiji 7s report from the Paris Olympics is imminent, with only a few days remaining before final decisions are made.
The review process began on Wednesday, with Coach Osea Kolinisau participating to provide his perspective on the team’s performance during the Paris Games.
Nayacalevu highlighted that the review involves consultations with various stakeholders, including players, technical officials, and former coach Gareth Baber. These discussions are crucial in evaluating the current status of the team, identifying necessary improvements, and planning for the future.
The union aims to develop a comprehensive strategic plan covering the next four to five years based on the findings from this review.
A significant aspect of the review is the assessment of Kolinisau’s contract. Decisions regarding the potential extension of his tenure will be heavily influenced by the outcomes of the review.
Despite the team’s challenges, Nayacalevu commended the men’s 7s team’s performance at the Paris Olympics, describing it as outstanding. He noted their resilience, particularly after enduring a challenging period with 22 consecutive winless tournaments in the World Sevens Series.
The review not only aims to address past shortcomings but also seeks to build a solid foundation for the team’s future success.
The insights gained from this comprehensive analysis will be instrumental in shaping the direction of Fiji Rugby Union’s sevens program in the years ahead.
