PNC 2024 Updates: Samoa Determined to Win despite playing Away…

Samoa Eyes Win On ‘Fiji Soil’

They are called Flying Fijians for a reason, if they are allowed to fly, they will fly. These were the words of Manu Samoa head coach Mahonri Schwalger during their captain’s run at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.

“We are really excited to be here,” the tough former Samoan captain to the 2011 Rugby World Cup told SUNsports.

“It is a new year and new competition and we are looking forward to a good game.”

Schwalger was a member of the Super Rugby winning Chiefs side from 2012 to 2013.

He told SUNsports that they are expecting a physical encounter from the Flying Fijians as they look to secure a win in their Pacific Nations Cup opener.

He added the challenge they face is the unpredictability of the Fiji players.

Schwalger said it would be a memorable game for them since it coincided with Samoa Rugby Union’s 100 years celebration.

The Marist Brothers brought the game to Samoa in 1920 and the Apia Rugby union was formed in 1924. On August 18, 1924 Western Samoa played its first international against Fiji in the capital Apia, with Fiji winning the game 6–0.

Schwalger said they are aware of a big task ahead of them and they would get the job done on Fiji soil.

“It is a big year for us. We play Fiji every year and the boys know what is expected. Our whole nation is watching and they are supporting us throughout the campaign,” he said.

Schwalger added the team has been preparing well the past three weeks leading to the PNC opener.

“It is a challenge for the new players, some being their first time in Fiji. It will be an awesome game,” he said.

The match kicks-off at 6pm.
