The time is running out for Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys to come to a new contract agreement as the NFL season draws near, but there is still a significant roadblock.

There is not much time left for Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys to come to a new contract before the 2024 NFL season.

There have apparently been talks between the two parties, but if Jerry Jones and company want the star quarterback to avoid becoming a free agent in 2025, they need to make a deal quickly.

We are finding out what is preventing the contract discussions from moving forward as the conversations carry on.

The length of a prospective deal is holding up the conversations, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic on her Scoop City podcast.

She stated during the debate, which starts at 8:07, “The holdup at this point, from what I understand, is about the years the Dallas Cowboys are willing to commit to.”

Prescott wants the team to commit to him for a long time, but Dallas isn’t sure if they want to hold onto him for “longer than two, three, or four years.”

As he approaches the 2024 NFL season in the last year of his contract, Prescott is placing a wager on himself. Due to his no-trade, no-tag clause, he will become an unrestricted free agent if no agreement is reached.

That might be problematic for the Cowboys, as they would have to fight for Prescott’s return to Dallas through bidding. The price only increases if an agreement is not completed before the season begins.

Furthermore, Prescott, who finished second in the NFL MVP voting a year ago, is aware of his complete leverage.

Prescott had one of his best seasons to date last season. Nine interceptions, an NFL-high 36 touchdowns, and 4,516 yards were all thrown by him.

Prescott’s performance was recognized with a spot on the second team of the Pro Bowl and a nomination to his third Pro Bowl.

Prescott will eventually surpass all other players in the league in salary.

Whether that happens with the Cowboys or with another team is the question.

Dallas’ 2024 campaign will begin on Sunday, September 8, when it travels to play the Cleveland Browns. For the game on FOX, Tom Brady will be hosting his first-ever broadcast.
