The Dallas Cowboys, who are currently 3-3, are among the NFL’s most underachievers. Despite finishing as one of the top five teams last season, the Cowboys rank 14th offensively. Quarterback Dak Prescott is not performing up to par, and the team needs another playmaker to relieve some of the strain on star receiver CeeDee Lamb.

As Dallas’ No. 2 wide receiver, third-year wide receiver Jalen Tolbert has performed admirably. However, the team may use a player of a higher calibre, which is why CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell proposed a deal in which the team would acquire former All-Pro wideout Dionate Johnson from the Carolina Panthers. “Acquiring Carolina Panthers top target Diontae Johnson, who leads his 1-5 squad in catches (29), receiving yards (340) and receiving touchdowns (three), could help fix [the problem of having WRs who don’t create separation],” said Podell. Jones will realise that Johnson, who is currently 29 years old and entering the final year of his current contract, is also approaching 30. If the Cowboys are still serious about making a run at the playoffs this season, they should move to trade Carolina for a Day 3 pick (picks four through seven). There would be no long-term commitment to Johnson beyond 2024 because he is in the final season of a two-year, $36.7 million contract. This would free up the team to look for another wide receiver improvement in the upcoming summer.

As Podell noted, the Cowboys pass-catchers are posting the second-worst separation average in the NFL, at only 3.0 yards per route ran. With Johnson providing an average of 5.1 yards of cushion per route run, Dallas would have three reliable receiving options with Lamb and Tolbert unavailable due to a knee ailment.
