When Coach Mike Locksley opted for a 2-point conversion instead of an extra point during the fourth quarter of the game against Southern California, the offensive players showed full support for his choice without hesitation.
The intent was clear.
“We want to be aggressive in our play, whether passing or rushing,” said redshirt junior quarterback Billy Edwards Jr., referring to the 2-point conversion that contributed to their comeback victory of 29-28 against the Trojans. “Offensively, we aim to adopt a hunting mentality, always pushing forward and taking risks. We won’t play timidly.”
With aspirations of qualifying for a fourth consecutive bowl game, Maryland (4-3, 1-3 Big Ten) should maintain this aggressive mindset throughout the rest of the season. Their upcoming match against Minnesota (4-3, 2-2) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. is crucial for moving toward that aim.
The win over the Trojans provided the Terps with a significant boost in confidence, evident during their weekly media session on Tuesday.
“We believe in our abilities as a team,” stated junior wide receiver Octavian Smith Jr. “We just need to ensure that we don’t hinder ourselves. Our focus is solely on the upcoming game, whatever it may be on our schedule.”
Reflecting on recent performances, Locksley noted improvements in their execution, particularly with blocking and overall play. Such progress comes from consistent practice.
Maryland’s offense needs to find its rhythm swiftly. In three nonconference victories, they dominated the first half 54-13 against opponents. In contrast, during four Big Ten games, they were outscored 69-35 in the first halves.
“A quick start is always preferable; slow beginnings are not ideal,” Smith emphasized. “However, Coach stresses that we shouldn’t focus on the scoreboard. We focus on the next play. He often says, ‘When the map doesn’t align with the terrain, follow the terrain.’ Winning in the Big Ten is tough, but we know our potential, we’re confident, and we will keep improving.”
“I still believe in our team,” he added. “We have talented skill players. While we may be inexperienced in certain positions, I’ve seen growth in these players at just the right moment for us. The win was essential for our program, boosting our confidence and revitalizing our momentum.”
