Cleveland Browns’ Myles Garrett and Las Vegas Raiders’ Maxx Crosby—are looking bleak. Without a doubt, these two players rank at the top of Detroit’s wish list, regardless of the order.
It’s understandable for Lions fans to hope that general manager Brad Holmes makes a bold move, especially considering the team’s realistic ambitions of competing for the Super Bowl in 2024, particularly after the loss of standout edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson due to injury.
Garrett and Crosby are the most suitable replacements for Hutchinson’s impact on the field. Sadly, it seems neither is likely to be traded before the November 5 deadline.
Crosby and Raiders owner Mark Davis have consistently stated that the three-time Pro Bowler won’t be moved this season, a sentiment echoed in reports.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirms that the Raiders don’t intend to trade Crosby, with the same information coming from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
While Garrett has not been as frequently mentioned in Detroit discussions due to Crosby’s Michigan connections, he isn’t a viable option either.
Rapoport has noted that teams interested in Garrett have been firmly told “no,” and Garrett himself has stated, “I’ll be playing here.”
It’s clear why both teams are reluctant to part with these star edge rushers, as each is a key player for their franchises. However, it’s unfortunate that such talented athletes find themselves in less than ideal circumstances.
Returning to the Lions, while a massive trade would be great, Holmes doesn’t necessarily need to make one to keep the team competitive.
He does need to find a player with a solid track record. An excellent target could be Za’Darius Smith, another edge rusher with the Browns, who would significantly enhance the Lions’ defense.
