As the NBA season kicks off, the Los Angeles Lakers under coach JJ Redick are showing notable improvement, sparking optimism among fans. But not everyone shares this hopeful outlook—especially certain former Lakers players.
At this stage of the season, the market for skilled free agents is sparse. Those still without a team are likely eyeing two-way or 10-day contracts, opportunities abroad, or chances in the G League while waiting for a call as injuries occur. Here’s a look at some former Lakers who aren’t currently on an NBA roster but may still make an appearance this season.
JaVale McGee
Surprisingly, JaVale McGee—a former starter on three NBA championship teams—is still a free agent. After contributing to the Golden State Warriors’ back-to-back titles in 2017 and 2018, McGee joined the Lakers, where he started in 130 games over two seasons.
During the 2020 title run, McGee and Dwight Howard played key roles beside Anthony Davis, creating one of the NBA’s top defensive frontlines.
Since then, McGee’s career has taken a downturn. He’s moved through five teams, unable to recapture his past success. Last season with the Kings, he averaged just seven minutes per game across 46 appearances.
Now 36, McGee might find a role as a veteran presence in the locker room, though his days as a significant contributor are likely behind him.
