The season is off to a strong start for the Los Angeles Lakers. They are 4-2 after six games and have improved significantly from their Darvin Ham-led squad from the previous campaign. Their roster problems still exist, though. They are shallow in a number of crucial areas, particularly the frontcourt. The injuries to Christian Wood and Jarred Vanderbilt, two backup bigs, have made that even worse. Particularly concerning is Vanderbilt’s injury, and head coach JJ Redick’s most recent news wasn’t positive.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Redick stated that Vanderbilt is still experiencing foot pain. Redick noted that he should be seen on a week-to-week basis, but he did not refer to it as a “setback.” Vanderbilt only played in 29 games last season and hasn’t worn a Lakers uniform since February 2023. Missing this much action is undoubtedly troubling for a guy like Vanderbilt who depends so heavily on physicality and athleticism. That worry is only heightened by the fact that he keeps experiencing obstacles or delays in his return.

Vando can contribute significantly to the Lakers when healthy, particularly defensively. He can guard several positions and offer excellent assistance defence at 6′ 8″. Despite his offensive limitations, he gives this club much-needed toughness. For this reason, prior to the 2023–24 season, the front office offered him a four-year contract worth $48 million. He hasn’t been able to deliver enough value to justify that contract thus far. His contract may be used to match salaries in a possible deal if his health and availability issues persist.
