Anthony Davis Shares Concerning Insights on His Recent Injury
Zach Stevens
The Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Detroit Pistons by 12 points on Monday, a team unlikely to reach the playoffs this year, which brings their record to 4-3. Compounding the loss, Anthony Davis sustained a foot injury during the game.
While he continued to participate, Davis appeared downcast during his postgame press conference. He revealed that he has been “managing” this injury since the summer and that it has been “killing” him.
The Lakers’ star is currently listed as day-to-day with the injury.
Despite this, Davis had an impressive performance against the Pistons, scoring 37 points. He is playing some of the best basketball of his career and currently leads the NBA in points per game at 32.6. Last season, he was exceptional, averaging 24.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game.
J.J. Redick, the Lakers’ new head coach, has emphasized getting Davis more involved in the offense, and Davis has thrived under this approach.
Davis has a history of injuries during his tenure with the Lakers, and if he misses a significant amount of time, Los Angeles could face difficulties, particularly due to their limited frontcourt depth.
Forward Jarred Vanderbilt and center Christian Wood have yet to see action this season after undergoing offseason surgeries.
Additionally, Jaxson Hayes has struggled to effectively protect the rim and secure rebounds when Davis is off the court. The Lakers have been outscored by 5.1 points per 100 possessions with Hayes playing this season.
On Monday, the Lakers were significantly outrebounded (55 to 37), allowing the young Pistons team to capitalize on numerous second-chance opportunities. Detroit recorded 17 offensive rebounds in the game.
Los Angeles is now 1-3 on this five-game road trip, which will conclude on Wednesday against a Memphis Grizzlies team that averages 47 rebounds per game this season.
Afterward, the Lakers will return home to face the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.
