‘Not in a rush’: Smith’s honest admission amid Roosters doubts as Robbo meeting looms
Brandon Smith’s future at the Roosters looks to be coming to an end, with the gun hooker revealing he’s “not really in a rush” to sit down with NRL rivals.
It comes amid a report from The Daily Telegraph, revealing rival clubs have reportedly been approached by the Tricolours to gauge their interest in Smith’s services.
The 28-year-old is contracted until the end of the 2025 season, meaning he’s free to sit down with prospective clubs regarding a move for the 2026 season.
As it stands, he’s sidelined until the middle of next year after he went under the knife on his knee, suffering a brutal MCL and ACL injury to close out the regular season.
Smith’s earning a reported $900,000 per-season, but has battled with injuries and form during his time at the Roosters.
Speaking on James Graham’s The Bye Round podcast, Smith opened up on his current contract situation.
“My manager told me when do you want me to talk to other clubs and I just said I am not really in a rush at the moment,” Smith said.
“Usually you sign a contract for security … in case pre-season you get injured or something happens like that. With me, I am already injured.
“I don’t have a risk of being reinjured. So I just told them to wait it out, don’t talk to anyone yet and I want to go back to training and get my knee right.”
He also explained that Robinson is still away on holidays, and once he returns to the club’s base he will have a sit-down chat with his coach.
“When we get back to training we will have the proper discussion. Ideally I would like to stay at the Roosters,” Smith said.
“I don’t want to go anywhere and my partner is well entrenched in the club. Ideally I would like to stay but the game of rugby league doesn’t always have the same opinions as yourself.”
Smith’s comments come after reports surfaced that Smith’s stay at the Roosters wouldn’t be extended past his current contract.
Meanwhile, teammate Terrell May has reportedly also been given permission to depart the club with immediate effect, being granted permission to negotiate with rivals.
The Roosters have already lost the likes of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Luke Keary, Joseph Suaalii and Joseph Manu ahead of the 2025 season.
