Championship League Snooker: John Higgins Narrowing the Gap on Ronnie O’Sullivan in the All-Time 147 List with Historic Break

John Higgins prepared for his attempt to secure a record sixth Welsh Open title next week by becoming the oldest player ever to achieve a maximum 147 break at the Championship League in Leicester on Saturday.

By winning Group 5 of the prestigious invitational event, Higgins also reduced the gap between himself and long-time rival Ronnie O’Sullivan on the sport’s all-time list of career 147 breaks.

Higgins, a four-time world champion, moved within two maximums of O’Sullivan as he set the record for the oldest player to make a 147 at the Championship League. The incredible break came in the first frame of his 3-2 victory over Fan Zhengyi in the semi-finals of Group 5, before he overcame Ricky Walden in the final to advance to next month’s winners’ group.

Fan responded with breaks of 68 and 139 to take a 2-1 lead, but the in-form Scotsman rallied with 76 and 66 breaks to level the match, before staging a comeback from 2-0 down to defeat Walden in the final.
