The Turkish Football Federation fined Jose Mourinho £20,000 for his furious outburst after Fenerbahce’s narrow 3-2 victory over Trabzonspor on Sunday. The former Manchester United manager joyfully celebrated Sofyan Amrabat’s goal in stoppage time, which continued to put pressure on Galatasaray, who were at the top of the table. But despite the victory, he continued to criticise the officials, saying: “We play against a system. And the hardest thing is to play against a system,” Mourinho said.
As part of his lengthy eight-minute tirade, Mourinho’s fervent remarks earned the Portuguese manager a heavy penalty. A statement released on Thursday read: “In the post-match flash interview and press conference are evaluated as a whole; the statements in question are contrary to sportsmanship, sports ethics or the concept of fair play, damage the reputation of the TFF, aim to diminish the value of Turkish football, cast a shadow over the impartiality of the referees and other match officials, and are therefore punished with a discretionary fine of 900,000 TL in accordance with Article 38/4-a of the FDT due to Unsportsmanlike Statements.”
According to Football London, the two-time Champions League champion was also hit with a fine of almost £1,300 and banned from the touchline and changing room for one game for acting unsportily towards opposing fans.
