AC Milan have reportedly made an enquiry into signing defender Simone Canestrelli, who is currently catching the eye with Filippo Inzaghi’s Pisa.
As per La Nazione (via MilanNews), Canestrelli has been the ‘central pillar’ of Inzaghi’s Pisa team, which currently leads the Serie B standings and is in the hunt for promotion. His standout performances have attracted interest from several Serie A clubs.
The 24-year-old centre-back had already piqued the interest of Bologna scouts last season, but Milan are now among the clubs monitoring him. The club has made an ‘initial enquiry,’ according to the report.
However, it seems unlikely that Pisa will allow one of their key players to leave, especially ahead of their push for a historic promotion to Serie A. It is expected that they will retain Canestrelli for the time being, at least until January.
Canestrelli, who started his career in Empoli’s youth ranks, has also played for AlbinoLeffe, Crotone, and Como. Standing at 1.92 meters, he has proven to be a threat in the air, scoring two goals this season.
In addition to strengthening their defense, Canestrelli would also help Milan meet the league’s homegrown player requirements.
