The Buffalo Bills have parted ways with safety Mike Edwards after unsuccessful attempts to trade him ahead of the NFL deadline
Mike Edwards, a safety, was cut by the Buffalo Bills after they were unable to trade him before Tuesday’s NFL deadline.
A few weeks ago, Edwards, a free agent who was signed over the offseason, requested a trade because he was not receiving enough playing time. He has been out of action for the last four games and has only appeared in three games for Buffalo this season.
Edwards, who won his second Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs last season, was expected to start at safety for Buffalo after signing a one-year contract in March.
However, injuries kept him out of most of Buffalo’s spring activities and most of training camp, leading him to take on a backup role behind starters Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin.
Before joining Buffalo, Edwards played his first four NFL seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he also won a Super Bowl during the 2020 season.
In a separate move, the Bills placed edge rusher Dawuane Smoot on injured reserve, two days after he hurt his wrist in a 30-27 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Coach Sean McDermott said Smoot will need surgery and is expected to return before the season ends.
