Prescott suffered a partial avulsion of his right hamstring, meaning a portion of the tendon has detached from the bone.

Stephen Jones, the team’s executive vice president and son of owner Jerry Jones, informed 105.3 The Fan that Prescott will be placed on IR and the timeline for his return is uncertain.

“I think there’s no way he’ll be back in four weeks, so we’ll put him on IR and utilize that roster spot for the next four weeks and assess from there,” Stephen Jones said, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. “It’s obviously a tough situation, losing him for that period, but we’re prioritizing what’s best for Dak. Right now, it’s uncertain if it’ll be four weeks, six weeks, or the whole season. We’ll monitor the situation and see how it develops.”

Sources told ESPN that Prescott is expected to need six-to-eight weeks for recovery. However, it remains unclear if surgery will be required.

If surgery becomes necessary, Prescott would likely miss the remainder of the season.

The injury occurred during last Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, following a five-yard run in the third quarter. Prescott left the game and did not return.

“I felt it as I was getting up from the run. I can’t say I felt it during the run itself,” Prescott said, according to ESPN.com. “Perhaps something happened during the tackle. I’m not sure. But when I stood up, I felt something. Initially, I didn’t think much of it. It’s a physical game, and you often feel different things that go away.”

Who will replace Dak Prescott for the Dallas Cowboys? Cooper Rush, Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys Credit: Dale Zanine-Imagn Images With Prescott sidelined, Cooper Rush is set to start in his place, beginning with next Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Cowboys are 5-1 with Rush as the starting quarterback. He had a 4-1 record in 2022 when Prescott injured his right thumb.

“Cooper has been excellent in preparing Dak, and now Dak will reverse roles and help Cooper,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said, per ESPN. “[Rush’s] temperament is outstanding. He’s probably the most even-keeled quarterback I’ve worked with. Smart and cerebral, he allows you to keep your offense flexible. That’s what you want in all your quarterbacks. You don’t want to have to change your offensive strategy just because of who’s playing.”

Former first-round draft pick Trey Lance will back up Rush.

The Cowboys are listed as seven-point home underdogs against the Eagles.
