St George Illawarra has finalized the signing of Parramatta captain Clint Gutherson, who will join the club as their new fullback for the upcoming season.
After weeks of speculation, Gutherson was officially released from his contract with Parramatta on Thursday. The Eels had informed their captain that he would be moved into a utility role for 2025 if he stayed, giving him the freedom to explore other opportunities as he entered the final year of his contract.
Dragons coach Shane Flanagan wasted no time in securing Gutherson’s signature following the club’s release of halfback Ben Hunt last week. However, it’s unlikely Gutherson will take over as captain from the departing Hunt, who was also an Origin representative.
“Clint will be a great addition to our squad for the next three years,” Flanagan said in a statement. “He’s not only an exceptional fullback but also a leader, with competitive drive, toughness, and versatility. Beyond his on-field abilities, he’ll be a major asset to our younger players in the years to come.”
Gutherson expressed his excitement about the move. “I’m really excited and honored to join the Dragons and wear the jersey with that badge on my chest,” he said. “The club’s rich history is unmatched, and the direction the team is heading under Flano and the staff is something I want to be part of. I’m looking forward to contributing to where we’re headed over the next few years and embracing the challenge ahead.”
New Eels coach Jason Ryles commented, “We would have preferred Clint to stay with us for 2025, but we respect his decision to seek new opportunities and support him in making the choice that’s best for his career.”
The Dragons have offered Gutherson a $2.5 million contract through to the end of 2027, and he will slot straight into the fullback position, with Tyrell Sloan moving to the wing following Zac Lomax’s transfer to Parramatta.
With Hunt’s exit leaving a gap in the halves, the Dragons still need to recruit an experienced playmaker for next season, unless they experiment with Gutherson alongside Kyle Flanagan. The club has already bolstered its roster with the signings of Souths hooker Damien Cook—who is expected to assume the captaincy—and Cowboys star Valentine Holmes. Meanwhile, Jack Bird has moved to Wests Tigers, and utility Max Feagai has joined the Dolphins.
