Lions vs. Texans: Injury Updates, Predictions, and Key Points for ‘Sunday Night Football’ Showdown

Lions vs. Texans: Preview, Predictions, and Key Factors for ‘Sunday Night Football’ Matchup

The Detroit Lions (7-1) are set for their second “Sunday Night Football” appearance of the season as they visit the Houston Texans (6-3) at NRG Stadium this weekend.

Detroit hasn’t lost a game since Week 2 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and boasts an undefeated 4-0 road record this season. A win against Houston would extend Detroit’s streak to seven games, tying the fifth-longest in franchise history, and would mark their first seven-game winning streak in 29 years.

The Texans, meanwhile, are coming off a 21-13 loss to the New York Jets on “Thursday Night Football” and continue to search for offensive consistency this season. This will be Houston’s third primetime game of the year.

The Lions and Texans have faced off only five times, with Houston winning four straight since 2008, most recently in 2020. Detroit’s lone victory came on Sept. 19, 2004, at Ford Field.

Below are predictions and key factors for the matchup, set for a 7:20 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.

Why I’m Confident

Josh: Lions Offense

Regardless of location or opponent, Detroit’s offense has been dominant, and the return of wide receiver Jameson Williams bolsters their arsenal. Though Houston’s defense has allowed the second-fewest total yards per game this season, they’ve shown vulnerability against the run, surrendering 4.7 yards per carry — the ninth-highest rate in the league. Expect significant contributions from David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs.

Tommy: Texans’ Injury Issues

Detroit’s high-powered offense is hard to bet against, but Houston’s injury woes make their challenge even steeper. The Texans have already lost wide receiver Stefon Diggs for the season, and while Nico Collins could potentially return, it seems unlikely. Tank Dell was also limited due to a back injury. In addition to offensive concerns, the Texans’ offensive line and defensive end Will Anderson Jr. face injury questions. To defeat the Lions, Houston needs its best lineup, which is looking increasingly doubtful.

Why I’m Concerned

Josh: Texans Defense

Houston’s defense has been formidable, allowing the second-fewest yards per game and ranking 14th in points allowed. They are among the top four teams in pressures and the top 10 in takeaways. If there’s a unit capable of containing Detroit’s offense, it’s Houston’s defense.

Tommy: Potential Collins Return

If Nico Collins returns, it would improve the Texans’ offensive outlook. Houston has averaged only 19.3 points per game over the last three weeks without him, and quarterback C.J. Stroud has managed just one touchdown pass during that span. Matching Detroit’s offensive output, which has been nearly 40 points per game in their last five, will be a significant challenge for Houston.

Key Matchup

Josh: Lions DBs vs. Texans WRs

C.J. Stroud struggled last week without Stefon Diggs and Nico Collins, relying heavily on Tank Dell. Even if Collins is back, Detroit’s secondary needs to perform at a high level to achieve a similar outcome.

Tommy: Lions Offense vs. Texans Defense

The Lions boast the league’s top offense, but the Texans’ defense is strong, ranking sixth against the pass and fourth against the run. Detroit leads the league in rushing and is 11th in passing. If Houston can contain one or both elements of Detroit’s attack, they might prevent a high-scoring game. Otherwise, a shootout or blowout could be in store.

All Eyes On

Josh: Lions WR Jameson Williams

Williams missed two games due to off-field issues, but Detroit’s offense hasn’t skipped a beat. Head coach Dan Campbell indicated Williams will play, but questions remain about how many more chances he’ll get, especially with recent news of an off-field incident. Williams needs standout performances to prove his worth and refocus attention on his on-field abilities.

Tommy: EDGE Za’Darius Smith

If Smith suits up on Sunday, his debut with Detroit will be worth watching. Although he may play on a limited snap count, his impact could be critical for a defensive front that’s struggled to generate pressure since Aidan Hutchinson’s season-ending injury.

Prediction

Josh: Lions 27, Texans 17

Even if Nico Collins returns, Houston’s offense has struggled while Detroit’s has thrived. Expect the Lions to capitalize on this primetime opportunity and make a national statement.

Tommy: Lions 42, Texans 21

Detroit should take advantage of Houston’s defensive vulnerabilities, especially if the Texans’ offense falters while reintegrating Collins. Although Houston’s defense could keep it closer, Detroit’s offense is expected to maintain their dominance for an eighth win.

Season Records

Josh: 6-2 (last pick won)

Tommy: 6-2 (last pick won)
