Mavericks’ surprising solution to injury troubles is standing right in front of them

The Dallas Mavericks found a much-needed boost in their 119-99 win over the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. Luka Doncic led the team, notching a double-double with 27 points and 13 assists, coming up just three rebounds shy of a triple-double.

Kyrie Irving played a crucial supporting role, contributing 15 points in the first quarter while hitting 6 of 7 shots. His impactful play extended to both ends of the court, making key defensive plays that sparked fast-break opportunities and easy baskets.

Despite the victory, Dallas faced challenges, particularly on the boards, where they were outrebounded 51-47. Chicago also secured five more offensive rebounds. The Mavericks’ depleted frontcourt—missing forwards P.J. Washington and Maxi Kleber, and center Dereck Lively II—didn’t help matters.

Washington’s recent knee sprain added to the team’s injury woes. Kleber, dealing with a hamstring issue, has only appeared in two games this season. Lively II’s shoulder sprain caused him to miss two consecutive matches.

The Mavericks’ solution to these setbacks may come from within their existing roster. Dante Exum, injured in training camp and now recovering from surgery, was the first casualty. This string of injuries has strained Dallas’ rotation, but an overlooked answer is emerging.

Enter Naji Marshall, a fan favorite. While his offense struggled initially, with only 3.2 points per game on 28.6 percent shooting in October, his defensive prowess stood out. Marshall’s ability to guard multiple positions and lock down the perimeter has been vital. His aggressive approach and five steals in the last three games highlight his defensive impact.

Marshall’s growth is crucial for Dallas to manage their injury issues. He delivered his strongest performance on Monday, scoring 20 points while going perfect from beyond the arc. In Wednesday’s game, where he started for the first time, Marshall scored eight points and recorded two steals over 21 minutes.

Marshall’s improvement hasn’t gone unnoticed. Center Daniel Gafford praised his development and credited his positive mindset. Marshall’s continued consistency in both shooting and defense will be key for Dallas as they navigate their injury-plagued roster.

With Washington sidelined, Marshall is expected to start on Friday, likely taking on the challenging assignment of defending Kevin Durant. Success in this role could be pivotal in helping Dallas avenge their previous defeat to the Phoenix Suns.
