The Fiji Water Flying Fijians produced a stunning comeback to defeat Spain 33-19 in their third match of the Autumn Nations Series. The thrilling encounter saw Fiji rally from a significant deficit to secure victory in the final quarter of the match, showcasing their resilience and flair.

First Half: A Tight Battle

Spain started the game with purpose and discipline, unsettling the Fijians early on. Gonzalo Lopez opened the scoring for the home side with a penalty, giving Spain a 3-0 lead. Fiji responded shortly after with a converted try from winger Ponipate Loganimasi, putting them ahead 7-3.

However, Spain regained momentum in the 22nd minute when they were awarded a penalty try, pushing them ahead 10-7. Adding to Fiji’s troubles, scrumhalf Simione Kuruvoli was sent to the sin bin for an infringement during the sequence.

Fiji had an opportunity to regain the lead when Sam Matavesi crossed the try line off a maul. Unfortunately, the TMO disallowed the try due to an obstruction, leaving the score unchanged. Another Matavesi effort later in the half suffered the same fate, further frustrating Fiji’s attack. Spain held firm and entered halftime with a narrow 10-7 lead.

Second Half: Spain Dominates Early

Spain started the second half with renewed vigor. Lopez converted three penalty kicks in quick succession, extending Spain’s lead to 19-7 by the 51st minute. The Fijians appeared rattled, with their usual free-flowing style stifled by Spain’s disciplined defense and tactical kicking game.

Fiji’s Comeback: A Display of Determination

Trailing by 12 points, Fiji’s comeback began in the 54th minute when Sireli Maqala crossed the try line, reducing the deficit to 19-12. Though the conversion attempt was unsuccessful, the try reignited Fiji’s belief.

Five minutes later, Matavesi finally got his reward, scoring off a rolling maul. Caleb Muntz added the extras, leveling the score at 19-19. The momentum had firmly shifted in Fiji’s favor as they found their rhythm.

Captain Waisea Nayacalevu showcased his leadership and skill in the 63rd minute, scoring a crucial try to put Fiji ahead for the first time since the first half. Muntz’s conversion extended the lead to 26-19, as the Fijians began to dominate the game.

Debutant Setareki Turagacoke sealed the victory in the 69th minute, scoring a try that highlighted Fiji’s attacking brilliance. Muntz’s successful conversion brought the score to 33-19, capping off an impressive comeback.

Reflections and Next Challenge

Despite their late dominance, Fiji left points on the field, with two tries from Matavesi disallowed due to obstructions. The Flying Fijians also struggled with discipline and cohesion in the first half but ultimately displayed their trademark resilience and creativity to overcome a spirited Spanish side.

The team now turns its focus to a formidable challenge against Ireland in their final November test match, set to take place at Aviva Stadium next Sunday. Fiji will aim to build on this victory and address their areas of improvement as they prepare to face one of the world’s top teams.
