Former Fiji PM Voreqe Bainimarama Freed from Prison Early
Former Prime Minister of Fiji, Voreqe Bainimarama, has been released from prison after serving just six months of a 12-month sentence, according to a statement issued by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) today.
Bainimarama and former police chief Sitiveni Qiliho were imprisoned in May for obstructing the course of justice.
“The Fiji Corrections Service confirms that former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has been granted early release today [Friday], in accordance with section 46(3) of the Corrections Act,” the statement read.
The decision came after a thorough review of Bainimarama’s application, which was processed in line with the legal provisions for early release and supervised reintegration.
Section 46(3) of the Corrections Act permits early release based on specific criteria ensuring public safety and aiding the inmate’s reintegration into society.
“All requirements were carefully reviewed, including eligibility, release conditions, and supervisory protocols, in line with FCS regulations,” the statement continued.
The FCS will supervise Bainimarama’s reintegration to confirm adherence to the terms of his release.
“This reflects the FCS’s dedication to justice, rehabilitation, and reintegration, as outlined in the Corrections Act.”
