Cowboys Fans Won’t Want to Hear What Jahmyr Gibbs Had to Say About the 2023 NFL Draf
When Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs joined “The Richard Sherman Podcast,” he dropped a nugget that’s sure to sting Dallas Cowboys fans. Gibbs revealed he was convinced he’d end up wearing a Cowboys jersey if he’d been available when they were on the clock at pick No. 26 in the 2023 NFL Draft.
“I knew for a fact Dallas was going to get me at 26 if I was still there,” Gibbs shared, reflecting on the draft process.
Of course, that scenario never came to fruition because Detroit shocked the league by taking Gibbs with the No. 12 pick, a move that initially had analysts scratching their heads. Fast forward to today, and it’s safe to say the Lions’ gamble paid off. Gibbs has turned into a star, making his selection at 12 look like a stroke of genius.
Cowboys’ Missed Opportunity
For a Cowboys fan base watching their team struggle to run the ball, Gibbs’ comments hit particularly hard. After letting Tony Pollard walk in free agency, Dallas opted for defensive lineman Mazi Smith in the first round. Unfortunately, Smith has struggled mightily, ranking dead last among defensive linemen per PFF with a 30.3 grade.
Meanwhile, Gibbs has been electric for the Lions, showcasing his dual-threat abilities as both a runner and receiver. His college career at Georgia Tech and Alabama hinted at this kind of success, with 1,370 all-purpose yards and 10 touchdowns in his final season with the Crimson Tide.
The Cowboys’ rushing attack, on the other hand, has been abysmal this season. Averaging just 83.7 yards per game—second worst in the NFL—Dallas is undoubtedly feeling the void left by Pollard. Gibbs could’ve been the answer, but Detroit never gave them the chance.
What Could’ve Been
It’s easy to see why Cowboys fans might feel a pang of regret hearing Gibbs’ comments. Instead of one of the league’s top young running backs, Dallas is left questioning their draft strategy while struggling to find offensive consistency.
Gibbs’ meteoric rise only underscores what could’ve been for Dallas—a dynamic backfield presence who might have been the key to unlocking a much-needed spark for their offense. Instead, the Cowboys are left watching him shine in Detroit.
