Za’Darius Smith Embraces Detroit’s Intensity, Mentors Hutchinson
Detroit Lions defensive end Za’Darius Smith has quickly immersed himself in the team’s culture, attributing their impressive seven-game winning streak to an intense practice regimen under head coach Dan Campbell.
Speaking with CBS-Detroit’s Rachel Hopmayer, Smith shared his initial observations after just one week in the Lions’ locker room and on the practice field.
A Culture of Accountability
Smith was struck by the team’s disciplined approach to practice.
“When one guy messed up on the play, it was like it was the end of the world,” he said. “But that is what you want. You want the young guys to know that when they come on the field, ‘Hey, I can’t make a mistake.'”
The intensity of practice has already made Smith feel like he’s in mid-season form. He believes this high level of accountability ensures players are fully prepared for game day, with no room for error.
Mentorship for Aidan Hutchinson
Smith has also stepped into a mentorship role, particularly with standout defensive lineman Aidan Hutchinson. Sharing wisdom from his experience as a team captain, Smith is encouraging Hutchinson to foster camaraderie among teammates.
“He likes to play cards. He’s a card guy,” Smith noted. “I’ve been telling him things like inviting guys over for Thursday Night Football. That’s the kind of stuff you do as a leader. This is your defense. You have to own it.”
Smith hopes his influence will help Hutchinson grow into a stronger leader, recognizing his potential to guide the Lions’ defense both on and off the field.
Eyes on the Super Bowl
With the Lions riding high on a winning streak, Smith’s arrival and leadership may further strengthen their campaign as one of the favorites to contend for the Super Bowl this season.
