Peter Sterling is one of the biggest legends in the NRL and is a name synonymous with the Parramatta Eels.

Playing his entire NRL career with the blue and gold, he was instrumental as they became one of the best teams in the 1980s, winning four premierships.

He has remained involved in the game since retiring from playing in 1992, most notably as a commentator on Channel 9 until 2021.

He had never taken on an official role at his former club, but that has now changed.

Sterlo returns to Eels in ambassadorial role

The Parramatta Eels announced on Saturday that Sterling, who played 228 games for the club, will mark his official return to the club as Ambassador of the Eels Foundation.

According to the club, the Eels Foundation will support key projects and programs across three areas, the Club’s Academy & Pathway Programs, Football Facilities and Infrastructure including the Centre of Excellence (COE) & Community Centre, and Social Impact and Community programs.

Sterling said he was delighted to be back on board, and was fully supportive of the projects of the foundation.

“[We] have the opportunity to support the long-term future and legacy of the Club, to ensure that we remain one of the strongest sporting organisations in the country for years to come, both on and off the field,” Sterling said in a statement.

“We are more than football, we are a community, and the Foundation will help support social and community engagement. Our aim is to create a meaningful and long-lasting impact on our community, like we have done for generations.”

Whilst Sterling’s official role is away from the pitch, where the Eels are undergoing a rebuild led by Jason Ryles, he is also willing to be there to support the new coach and the players now that he is back with the club.

Sterling told The Daily Telegraphhe had been involved in positive conversations with Ryles, and insisted he was there to support him.

“It was very nice to have a meeting with Jason and find out what his plans are for the future and how he plans to get there,” he said.

“The main thing I want Jason to know – and he knows that after meeting the other day – is that I am 100 per cent behind him and if there is any reason he wants a chat I am only a phone call away.

“There is a real sense of optimism around the club with Rylesy coming in.”
