Lions ‘Should Absolutely Consider’ Signing Super Bowl Champion from 49ers
The Detroit Lions are being encouraged to pursue a San Francisco 49ers player who has competed in two Super Bowls and won one.
While the Lions are strong contenders for a Super Bowl appearance this season, they remain open to enhancing their roster by acquiring fresh talent.
Matt Holder of Bleacher Report has offered a recommendation for the Lions. In a November 18 feature highlighting each team’s biggest roster weaknesses ahead of Week 12, Holder proposed that the Lions target a specific player from the 49ers, who has participated in two Super Bowls, to strengthen their team.
Lions Should Target the 49ers’ ‘Top-Tier Starter’
Holder suggests that the Detroit Lions pursue cornerback Charvarius Ward from the San Francisco 49ers during the 2025 free agency period. He identifies cornerback as the Lions’ primary area of need, followed by edge-rusher, offensive line depth, wide receiver depth, and left guard.
“The Lions made significant moves at cornerback this offseason, trading for Carlton Davis and drafting Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. early. Yet, secondary play remains one of Detroit’s rare weak points in 2024,” Holder observed. “With Davis set to hit free agency in the spring, the Lions should absolutely explore cornerback options in the market.”
He continued, “Signing Charvarius Ward would be a massive boost for any Super Bowl-contending team. He’s an elite starter on the perimeter and has extensive postseason experience, having played in Super Bowls with both the 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.”
Holder also advised the Lions to consider drafting EDGE JT Tuimoloau from Ohio State in the 2025 NFL Draft, saying, “He’d be an excellent addition to Detroit’s pass rush and would seamlessly fit into the team’s aggressive run defense.”
The Detroit Lions Are Thriving
Beyond his recommendations for roster improvements, Holder praised the Lions for their current performance.
“Are the Detroit Lions the best team in the NFL right now? They very well could be,” Holder wrote. “The defense has room to grow, but when the offense performs like it did in Sunday’s 52-6 blowout of the Jacksonville Jaguars, it’s almost irrelevant.”
At the moment, Holder believes the Lions don’t need drastic changes.
“Could the Lions add veteran depth from the free-agent market or practice squads before the playoffs? Sure, but there’s no urgent need for Detroit to make major moves,” he wrote.
“The Lions continue finding ways to win, even when they aren’t perfect. They addressed their biggest concern at the trade deadline,” he added. “Though Za’Darius Smith won’t fully replace Aidan Hutchinson (broken leg), he’s a better option than anyone currently available in mid-November.”
Holder concluded by noting that with $62.1 million in projected 2025 cap space, the Lions are well-positioned financially to maintain their momentum and strengthen their roster in the offseason.
