Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell has made it clear that running back David Montgomery is a cornerstone of the team’s success this season. Comparing Montgomery to NFL legends Earl Campbell and Walter Payton, Campbell highlighted the rare and “violent” running style that makes Montgomery so effective and inspiring on the field.

A Throwback Running Style

Campbell likened Montgomery’s ability to break tackles and fight for extra yards to Earl Campbell and Walter Payton, both Hall of Famers known for their relentless, punishing approach to running the football.

“Earl Campbell ran like crazy. Walter Payton ran like crazy and would not go down,” Campbell said, reflecting on Montgomery’s similarities to these icons. For Campbell, Montgomery’s physicality and refusal to quit on plays embody a throwback mentality not often seen in today’s NFL.

Montgomery’s Offensive Impact

Montgomery is on pace for a standout season, projected to surpass 1,000 rushing yards and notch 17 touchdowns. He already leads the Lions with 10 rushing touchdowns, and his tough running style has been instrumental in the team’s offensive dominance.

“He’s a throwback,” Campbell added. “His running style is – it’s rare.”

Montgomery’s downhill, aggressive approach contrasts with the finesse and speed often prioritized in modern backs. His ability to lower his shoulder and grind out tough yards has made him a valuable weapon in Detroit’s offense.

Inspiring the Offensive Line

Montgomery’s toughness doesn’t just energize fans; it also inspires his teammates, especially the offensive line.

“The O-line loves blocking for that guy,” Campbell said. “You want to talk about inspiring? That inspires you to want to block.”

The ripple effect of Montgomery’s physicality pushes the entire offense to match his intensity, making the Lions a cohesive and dangerous unit.

A Rare Talent in Today’s NFL

For Campbell, the comparisons to Earl Campbell and Walter Payton underscore just how unique Montgomery is as a player. His blend of power, determination, and leadership has made him an invaluable asset to the Lions’ Super Bowl aspirations.

“First guy, he’s not going to let him tackle him,” Campbell said. “He continues to churn his legs, and just violent. Violent. Never give up, never going down.”

As Detroit marches toward potential postseason glory, Montgomery’s role as a focal point of the offense will only grow. His rare combination of grit and talent ensures he’ll remain a critical piece of the Lions’ success story.
