The Lions’ cornerback depth chart will see changes in Week 12. Veteran Emmanuel Moseley was activated from injured reserve on Saturday, while second-round rookie Ennis Rakestraw was placed on IR.
Moseley’s 2023 Lions debut was cut short by an ACL tear, his second in quick succession, sidelining him for the season.
Despite this, the 28-year-old re-signed with Detroit in the offseason, aiming for a healthy return. However, a torn pectoral in August delayed his comeback.
That injury kept Moseley out for months, but his return designation two weeks ago began his 21-day activation window, allowing him to practice.
Today’s move enables the former undrafted free agent to play as soon as tomorrow’s game against the Colts.
Moseley is expected to contribute in a depth role, with tempered expectations due to his long layoff. A healthy end to the season could benefit both Moseley and his free agent prospects for 2025.
Rakestraw, Detroit’s second cornerback selection in April, has had limited playing time, with just 42 defensive snaps.
First-round pick Terrion Arnold has been a full-time starter, while trade acquisition Carlton Davis and free agent signing Amik Robertson have anchored the secondary.
With Rakestraw sidelined for at least four games, Moseley’s return will help fill the gap.
The Lions rank fifth in defensive scoring but struggle against the pass, allowing 233 yards per game (27th in the league).
Moseley’s presence adds depth for the season’s second half, with Detroit now having used five activations.
One will likely bring back Alex Anzalone, but for now, the linebacker added in his absence is set to debut.
David Long has been promoted from the practice squad. Signed earlier this week, Long can be elevated up to three times.
The 28-year-old was unclaimed after being waived by the Dolphins, but Anzalone’s injury created an opportunity.
It remains to be seen how significant Long’s role will be in the coming weeks.
