PROVO, Utah – After suffering their second straight loss in a narrow defeat to Arizona State, the BYU Cougars return to Provo. No. 19 BYU Cougars vs. Houston Cougars

BYU slid further down the AP Poll following their loss to Arizona State. In the past two weeks, they have dropped 12 spots, with similar expectations for Tuesday’s College Football Playoff Rankings. Tied at the top of the Big 12 standings with Arizona State, Iowa State, and Colorado, BYU’s path to the Championship Game depends on results across the league due to tie-breakers and head-to-head losses. Meanwhile, Houston, eliminated from bowl eligibility, is ending their second straight losing season. Like BYU, Houston is on a two-game losing streak and hopes to close their season strong.

The teams have met three times before, most recently in 2020, when BYU triumphed 43-26 during their memorable 11-1 season. BYU is undefeated in the series. Saturday’s game marks Houston’s first visit to LaVell Edwards Stadium since 2014.

Fans attending the game can enjoy Cougar Canyon on the west side of the stadium starting at 5:00 p.m. MT. The Cougar Walk begins at 6:15 p.m. MT on the north end, with players and coaches entering through the southwest entrance.

BYU’s Path to the Big 12 Championship Game

When Utah missed a game-tying field goal against Iowa State, the Cyclones secured a “win and get in” scenario alongside Arizona State, pushing BYU out of control of their own fate in the Big 12 Title race.

BYU still has a chance to reach the Championship Game and even the College Football Playoff, but it requires some favorable outcomes on Saturday.

A potential eight-way tie for first place could occur if all top four teams lose, creating 256 possible tie-breaker scenarios. However, here are the most likely outcomes:

1. BYU must defeat Houston. A loss eliminates their chances.

2. Either Arizona must beat Arizona State, or Kansas State must defeat Iowa State.

If Arizona State loses, BYU would face Iowa State in the Championship Game. If Iowa State loses, BYU would face Arizona State. BYU holds the tie-breaker over Colorado.
