Mike McCarthy Responds to Jerry Jones’s Remarks on Possible Contract Extension

Mike McCarthy Responds to Jerry Jones’s Remarks on Possible New Cowboys Contract

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed a degree of optimism about head coach Mike McCarthy’s future despite a challenging season for the team.

Many believed McCarthy was on the hot seat in the final year of his contract. However, during a radio interview on Tuesday, Jones suggested it wasn’t unreasonable for McCarthy to receive an extension after the season.

“I don’t think that’s crazy at all,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan’s Shan & RJ. “This is a Super Bowl-winning coach. Mike McCarthy has experience and great ideas. There’s nothing in my demeanor or actions to suggest we’ve made decisions about this staff’s future. And we shouldn’t—it’s premature. Six games remain, and that’s a lot of football.”

During his Tuesday press conference, McCarthy was asked about Jones’s comments. He humorously responded, joking about the surprise surrounding the idea of his contract renewal becoming a talking point.

“Why are you laughing?” McCarthy said with a smile. “Crazy? I haven’t addressed it all year, and I’m not starting now, especially with a short week and a key division game ahead. But I’ll take the positive vibes—keep them coming. That’s all good. Still, it’s not where my focus is right now.”

McCarthy’s Cowboys (4-7) face the New York Giants (2-9) on Thanksgiving Day at 4:30 p.m. ET.

For now, any discussion about McCarthy’s long-term future in Dallas will have to wait.
