Melbourne Storm CEO Justin Rodski has expressed growing confidence that star fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen will re-sign with the club, even if only on a one-year extension.

Papenhuyzen, whose contract expires at the end of 2025, became a free agent on November 1 and reportedly received a lucrative offer from the Canterbury Bulldogs. However, despite the Bulldogs’ enticing bid and the Storm’s proposal being approximately $200,000 less than his current deal, the fullback appears close to recommitting to Melbourne.

Rodski highlighted the club’s optimistic stance during a media conference following the release of the 2025 NRL draw.

“We’re getting more and more confident in Ryan extending with us, but we’re working through those details at the moment,” Rodski stated.

The Storm have presented various contract options, including a one-year extension. This approach would allow Papenhuyzen to re-enter free agency after a full season, rather than following two injury-marred years.

“I think that’s a great option for both club and player,” Rodski said. “It gives us at least another two years with Ryan Papenhuyzen wearing the Melbourne Storm jersey.”

Papenhuyzen’s potential extension has implications for rising star Sua Fa’alogo, who has been touted as one of the league’s future stars. While Fa’alogo could explore the open market for 2026 if Papenhuyzen re-signs, Rodski confirmed the club’s commitment to both players.

“Sua is an up-and-coming star of the competition and he’s on a long-term contract with us,” Rodski assured. “We’ll be doing everything we can to see more of Sua in 2025 and beyond.”

If Papenhuyzen extends his contract, he will join a strong roster of re-signed players, including Nelson Asofa-Solomona, Cameron Munster, Eliesa Katoa, and new addition Stefano Utoikamanu, all signed through 2027. The Storm’s depth and planning underscore their focus on both immediate success and sustained dominance.

Fans can expect updates on Papenhuyzen’s contract in the near future as Melbourne seeks to solidify their squad ahead of the 2025 season.
