Padres Re-sign Infielder for 2025 Season
The San Diego Padres have re-signed infielder Tyler Wade for the 2025 MLB season, as announced by the team on Friday. The contract is valued at $900,000 for the 2025 season, with a $1 million player option for the 2026 season.
In addition, the Padres revealed they will not offer contracts to outfielder Bryce Johnson, infielder Mason McCoy, and right-handed pitchers Logan Gillaspie and Luis Patiño.
Following the news, Wade expressed his excitement on X, sharing a message that read “LFGSD” along with a brown and yellow heart emoji.
All-Star rookie center fielder Jackson Merrill also showed support for Wade’s return, posting a photo of himself and Wade on Instagram Stories with the caption “TWADE LFG.”
Wade first joined the Padres in November 2023, signing a minor league deal. Initially set to play in the minors, Wade made the Opening Day roster for the Seoul Series in South Korea and quickly became an important utility player for the Padres in 2024.
This contract marks the first time Wade will spend multiple seasons with the same team since he began his career with the New York Yankees. Wade played the majority of his career with the Yankees from 2017 to 2021 before brief one-year stints with the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics. Should Wade perform well in the upcoming seasons, he may secure a long-term spot with the Padres.
In 2024, Wade appeared in 90 games and had 138 at-bats for the Padres. He started strong, recording four hits and three runs in his first three games, though his production declined over the season. He ended with a .217/.285/.239 slash line, totaling 30 hits, 28 runs, and two RBIs.
Wade’s defensive contributions were particularly valuable. Early in the season, he stepped in at third base while Manny Machado recovered from offseason elbow surgery, which had limited Machado to a designated hitter role early in the year.
Wade’s return ensures the Padres will maintain roster flexibility, especially in case of injuries during the 2025 season.
