The leading Thunder from OKC are set to visit the Houston Rockets, who are experiencing their best start through 20 games since the 2017-18 season. The matchup will take place at 7 p.m. ET on NBA League Pass.

Houston’s resurgence began late last season as they aimed for the SoFi Play-In Tournament. Since March 1, the Rockets have compiled a 30-13 record, ranking third in the NBA behind Boston (34-9) and tonight’s opponent, OKC (31-11).

Both teams are not only the top two in the Western Conference but also lead the NBA in defensive ratings, with OKC allowing 102.8 points per 100 possessions and Houston close behind at 103.7.

This game features seven of the top ten defensive players in the league (based on Defensive Rating, minimum 30 minutes per game). In terms of limiting field goal percentage, the Thunder (54.4%) and Rockets (55.9%) rank first and second respectively for the lowest percentage allowed within six feet of the rim, holding opponents 7.3 and 6.7 percent below their usual scoring rates in that area.

From beyond the arc, both teams excel as well; the Thunder (33.7%) and Rockets (33.8%) rank third and fourth in allowing the lowest three-point shooting percentages.

In a matchup between such closely matched teams, finding tactical advantages will be crucial for success.

Fast break: The Rockets excel in transition scoring, averaging 18.7 points per game on fast breaks, ranking second in the league. Will OKC be able to prevent the Rockets from scoring easily?

Turnovers: The Thunder capitalize on their opponents’ errors, leading the league in points off turnovers at 21.3. Can Houston minimize their turnovers against a Thunder team that ranks first in steals, averaging 11.9 takeaways per game?
