Mountaineers Move On: West Virginia Fires Head Coach Neal Brown After 37-Point Rout

West Virginia Mountaineers Part Ways with Head Coach Neal Brown Following Disappointing Loss

The West Virginia Mountaineers have fired head coach Neal Brown, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. The decision comes after a dismal 37-point loss to Texas Tech in the 2024 regular season finale. Although Brown’s dismissal was likely already in the works, the embarrassing loss sealed his fate.

During his six-year tenure, Brown led the Mountaineers to a 37-35 record, including a Duke’s Mayo Bowl victory last December. However, despite finishing 6-6 and becoming bowl eligible for the fourth time in six years, the program appears to be falling behind in the competitive Big 12 conference.

Prior to the season, West Virginia was projected to finish 7th in the expanded 16-team Big 12 conference. Ultimately, they finished 9th, with their poor performance in the season finale against Texas Tech being a significant factor. The game saw Texas Tech go on a 32-0 scoring run, leading to a decisive victory.

The Mountaineers are now set to begin their search for a new head coach, with a Penn State assistant reportedly lined up for an interview.
