Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. expressed frustration over the six penalties called against him during Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Although only four penalties were accepted, it was still the highest number of penalties called on a defensive back in a single game this season.
Porter’s penalties have been a recurring issue, with this being his second game in four weeks with three or more penalties. He is the only cornerback in the NFL with two such games this season. After the game, Porter voiced his discontent with the referees, stating, “I’m mad at it. I’m trying to be great, and those flags get in the way.”
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin also expressed his dissatisfaction with the penalties, particularly those called against Porter while defending against Bengals receiver Tee Higgins. Tomlin felt that Porter matched Higgins’ physicality, but the officials’ calls hindered his performance.
Porter’s tendency to commit penalties dates back to his college days at Penn State. The Steelers have encouraged him to improve his technique and avoid instinctive grabbing, which can lead to bad habits. Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin emphasizes trusting technique over instinct, and Porter aims to work on this aspect of his game throughout the season.
