It seems like Mike Tomlin always knows when to pass a diva wide receiver off on an unwary team before he goes into full-blown implosion mode. We’re not sure what it is about him. Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant experienced this. The most recent addition to this group is Diontae Johnson. Johnson only played seven games for his new team before they thought they had enough and traded him to the Baltimore Ravens. Johnson was sent to the Carolina Panthers in the 2024 offseason for cornerback Donte Jackson.
Steelers supporters may now relax while Johnson annihilates Pittsburgh’s most formidable AFC North opponent from within. Adam Schefter of ESPN announced on December 4 that Diontae would receive a one-game suspension from the Ravens for actions that were detrimental to the team.
When Johnson’s attitude became problematic, the Ravens decided to take matters into their own hands. When Johnson was called upon late in Week 13, he declined to enter the game. Now that he won’t be playing until at least Week 15, Baltimore must be questioning whether the move was worthwhile.
The most recent in a long line of troublesome former Steelers wide receivers is Diontae Johnson.
The Steelers, for whatever reason, tend to find troublesome receivers with ease. They knew just when to fire Johnson after people said that Pittsburgh lost the deal and that it was a stupid move to send him away during the summer. Johnson has only 357 yards going into Week 14 of 2024, despite gaining 717 yards and five touchdowns in just 13 games the previous season. Even more absurd is the fact that in four games with the Baltimore Ravens, the Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl wide receiver has only caught one pass on five targets for six yards.
Nobody could have foreseen the level of this reprehensible output and efficiency. Baltimore only lost a late-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, thus the move didn’t cost them anything. However, it’s obvious that their move to sign the problematic wide receiver isn’t working out, and his presence is creating conflict in the locker room. Johnson’s NFL career could end quickly at this rate. Another receiver was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers before he could be controlled, and Johnson’s situation is not looking good.
