Lions’ Aidan Hutchinson Visits Marine Recruit Recovering from Paralysis

A 20-year-old Marine recruit, who was paralyzed from the neck down, is now focused on making a remarkable recovery and learning to walk again, with his sights

set on a brighter future.

Jacob Rinehart, from Chesterfield Township, sustained a severe spinal cord injury in October 2023 while training at Parris Island.

He was carrying a fellow Marine during a drill simulating a combat scenario when the other Marine accidentally squeezed his neck too hard, causing his spinal cord to swell and cutting off blood flow.

“During Marine Corps Boot Camp, I was carrying a fellow Marine on my neck as part of a drill, simulating an evacuation under fire,” Rinehart explained. “But the pressure on my neck led to my injury.”

Initially, doctors told Rinehart he would never walk again. At first, he couldn’t perform basic tasks like feeding himself, lifting his head, or even sitting up.

He started his rehabilitation in a wheelchair and slowly progressed to using crutches, eventually building enough strength to walk independently again.

Then, an unexpected visit changed his outlook.

Aidan Hutchinson, Detroit Lions defensive end and another athlete who had fought his way back from an injury, visited Rinehart at his home. The encounter left Rinehart in awe.

“When Aidan Hutchinson walked in, I couldn’t believe it,” Rinehart recalled. “It was an amazing moment.”

Hutchinson went beyond just visiting.

He arranged a FaceTime call with Lions star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Rinehart even got St. Brown’s autograph during the Thanksgiving Day game.

The visit didn’t stop there—Rinehart also met the Ford family, who gifted him Super Bowl tickets, offering him the chance to witness the game live.

Reflecting on the journey, Rinehart shared, “Hard work and dedication pay off. Even when facing tough limitations, nothing should stop you from living the life you want.”

Now, Rinehart is looking forward to cheering on the Lions as they aim for victory, drawing inspiration from his own comeback story.
