BYU Announces Kalani Sitake’s Contract Extension Following Intense Championship Saturday

Kalani Sitake’s BYU Contract Extension Announced Following Wild Championship Saturday

BYU football is standing by its head coach. Kalani Sitake has agreed to a contract extension with the program, as announced through the team’s social media platforms.

Sitake recently led BYU to a 10-2 season in the Big 12, securing a four-way tie for first place during the regular season. However, the Cougars missed out on the conference championship game due to tie-breaking rules. Arizona State ultimately claimed the Big 12 championship title.

The 2024 season marked a significant turnaround for BYU football, doubling its win total from the previous year. The Cougars have qualified for their first bowl game as a Big 12 member, with their opponent still to be determined.

Details of the contract extension have not yet been disclosed.

Under Sitake’s leadership, the Cougars have seen consistent success. Before joining the Big 12 in 2023, BYU competed as an independent program and experienced just two losing seasons under Sitake.

Sitake took over as head coach in 2016 and holds an overall record of 71-43 at BYU. Following the 2024 season, he is now 9-9 in Big 12 play. A late-season loss to Arizona State prevented a trip to the Big 12 title game and dashed hopes of a College Football Playoff berth.

Sitake appears content to remain in Provo.

“I am grateful for the continued confidence and support I receive in my role leading the BYU football program from President (Shane) Reese, Vice President (Keith) Vorkink, Athletic Director Tom Holmoe, and Deputy AD Brian Santiago,” Sitake said, according to Deseret. “Before becoming BYU’s head coach, I was first a Cougar fan and then a player here.”

The coach has already won four bowl games during his tenure and will aim for a fifth victory this postseason. As BYU awaits its bowl matchup, the future in Provo looks bright.
