Dusty May’s Value Shines as Michigan Edges Iowa 85-83
Michigan’s thrilling 85-83 win over Iowa at the Crisler Center further validated the Wolverines’ decision to hire Dusty May as their head coach. This victory marks Michigan’s seventh consecutive win, their longest streak since the 2020-21 season, and improves their record to an impressive 8-1 (2-0 Big Ten).
May’s innovative offense was on full display Saturday afternoon, with five Wolverines scoring in double figures. The balanced attack featured standout performances from Vlad Goldin (20 points, 11 rebounds), Tre Donaldson (18 points, 5 assists), Roddy Gayle Jr. (17 points), Danny Wolf (13 points, 14 rebounds), and Will Tschetter (13 points). May praised Tschetter’s consistency, saying, “He brings not only intangibles but tangibles… He just brings so much to our group every single day.”
May’s exceptional coaching was evident in the game’s final moments. With the score tied at 83 and 16.1 seconds remaining, he cleverly designed a play utilizing Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf as decoys to create space for Gayle’s game-winning drive. “We thought they’d focus on Vlad and Danny,” May explained. “We used those two as decoys… We felt if Roddy could get downhill, Danny and Vlad would have an opportunity on the glass.”
The victory was not without its challenges. Michigan committed 11 first-half turnovers and nearly squandered an 11-point lead in the final minutes. However, May’s composed leadership kept the team focused when it mattered most. “Dusty has done an amazing job,” Tschetter said. “I’m not surprised (about our start) at all.”
The Wolverines face another significant test Tuesday night when they take on Arkansas in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden.
