After a dismal 2024 season, the Dallas Cowboys are under increasing pressure to make changes. Discussions about head coach Mike McCarthy’s future have heated up since the team has a 5-8 record and is now ranked third in the NFC East. In a season marred by injuries and poor play, McCarthy, who guided the Cowboys to three straight 12-5 seasons from 2021 to 2023, has found it difficult to sustain success.
Barnwell proposes paying Johnson a stunning $125 million over five years, arguing that it will revitalise Dallas’ offence and help the team return to postseason contention.
“Johnson’s work as the offensive coordinator in Detroit has been impeccable,” Barnwell told reporters.
The Lions’ offence has been a formidable force under Johnson’s direction, finishing first in points per game (32.1) and second in total yards (394.8). Leading the NFC and improving on their NFC Championship run from the previous season, the Lions are currently 12-1.
The main cause of Dallas’ 2024 problems has been their patchy offensive output, especially after quarterback Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending injury. Barnwell thinks the Cowboys might benefit greatly from Johnson’s inventive play-calling and track record of success in Detroit.
“Dallas might instead need to take a bigger swing to fix its offence,” described Barnwell. “The Cowboys are not allowed to purchase first-round picks or circumvent the salary cap, but they are allowed to spend as much as they want on coaches. Although Johnson’s salary would be a substantial investment and likely infuriate every other team in the league, coaches generally receive inadequate compensation.
With fans expecting results and McCarthy’s job in doubt, Barnwell’s suggested $125 million wager on Johnson would be the daring move Dallas needs to regain its standing as a contender. On the other hand, the choice would be revolutionary for NFL coaches.
