Two More BYU Football Players Enter Transfer Portal
PROVO, Utah – BYU football continues to experience activity in the NCAA transfer portal.
Quarterback Noah Lugo and defensive tackle David Latu are the latest players to announce their intentions to transfer.
QB Noah Lugo Enters the Portal
True freshman quarterback Noah Lugo has decided to enter the transfer portal.
“Thank you [sic] BYU football and Coach Kalani and Coach Roderick for allowing me to be a Cougar. With that being said, I have entered the transfer portal with 4 years of eligibility!!” Lugo stated.
Lugo, a standout at Eaton High School in Haslet, Texas, joined BYU’s 2024 recruiting class. As an early enrollee, he spent the entire season with the team but didn’t play in any games.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound quarterback was considered a developmental player. Before signing with BYU, Lugo had been committed to UTSA but opted for BYU to join the Big 12 Conference.
Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick recently noted his preference for having four quarterbacks on the 2025 roster. Current eligible quarterbacks include Jake Retzlaff, Treyson Bourguet, McCae Hillstead, and Cole Hagen.
DT David Latu Declares for the Portal
Defensive tackle David Latu, a former JUCO All-American, has also entered the transfer portal.
“I want to thank the entire program and university from the bottom of my heart,” Latu wrote. “Special thanks to Coach Kalani, Coach Hill, Coach Ena, Coach Pop, and Coach Po’uha for believing in me. I’m so grateful for the chance to have played at BYU.”
Latu joined BYU from Snow College, where he earned Second-Team JUCO All-American honors. Despite expectations for an immediate impact, injuries and a late arrival to fall camp in 2024 limited his contributions.
Looking ahead, BYU’s defensive line will remain a focus in 2025. Interior players like John Taumoepeau, Luke To’omalatai, and Joshua Singh are expected to return. There’s also potential to shift Sani Tuala from defensive end to the interior line.
The NCAA transfer portal will remain open until Saturday, December 28.
