49ers overreactions: After a difficult season, is it time to replace Moody?

In recent seasons, the 49ers set the standard high. In four of the previous five NFL seasons, the team made it to the NFC Championship Game and made two trips to the Super Bowl. However, this season has been a complete bust. Continue playing the game with

The tight end While Brock Purdy and Deebo Samuel experienced notable declines in their statistical output this season, George Kittle is the only prominent 49ers player whose play did not deteriorate. You learnt everything there is to know about the 49ers if you only watched their 29-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday this season. The following are the fan base’s observations, as reported by Bluesky, regarding this 49ers overreacting elimination edition:

Overreactions? Yes, no and well-played.

Excessive reactions? Yes, well-played, and no. Yes, Purdy (and Toyota) were not exactly rewarded for their kindness by the offensive line. They gave Purdy a stocking full of coal as a return gift. In Sunday’s game, the 49ers’ offensive line performed poorly. However, it was also predicted. Trent Williams has missed five games in a row. Additionally, the 49ers used their third-string left guard and left tackle in the game due to a few more injuries. The 2025 NFL season will undoubtedly bring alterations to the offensive line. Aaron Banks is unlikely to return as a free agent with no restrictions.

The 49ers need to focus on strengthening their offensive line. However, some perspective is also necessary. The 49ers are not by themselves. There are needs along the offensive line for almost every NFL team. In general, defensive linemen are better athletic and more explosive than offensive linemen. The 49ers’ offensive line is regarded as superior to most, despite popular belief. The 49ers are ranked 14th in pass protection and first in run blocking in the NFL by Pro Football Focus, which rates every player in every game.

Purdy is far from the 49ers’ biggest problem. However, at some point he has to find a way to win games like this week’s or last week’s. These were winnable games had there been better QB play. — @michaelpedhirney.bsky.social

Overreaction? No.

Winning games is the quarterback’s responsibility. Additionally, this season, the 49ers did not win nearly enough games. Is Purdy to blame? Obviously not. However, a disproportionate amount of the credit and the blame are placed on his position. And no one gives a damn about injuries or anything else. Purdy stated, “We have what it takes to win, move the chains, put up points, and give our team a chance to win, regardless of who’s out there.” That’s how I think. I’m hard on myself because we haven’t been able to finish because of some guys who have been injured and all that. I’m just harsh on myself because of it.

All that matters is the final result, and Purdy failed to save the team. Like his fourth-quarter comebacks in the NFL playoffs last season, Purdy acknowledges that he must find the answers to save the squad.

Purdy is a robot in Shanahan’s system (which he loves) but the 49ers actually need a QB with some creativity who will cover up some of Shanahan’s mistakes — @pdxlagniappe.bsky.social

Overreaction? Yes.

I believe the misconception that Purdy is just a paint-by-numbers quarterback was debunked a long time ago. In order to locate receivers who are not even in the progression, he frequently makes second-reaction plays or deviates from the script. He included jogging into his game this season. Purdy has rushed for 311 yards and four touchdowns with two games left. When he finished fourth in the NFL MVP vote in 2023, he generated more than twice as much on the field.

Plays like that aren’t planned out as runs. He improvised in such plays, finding methods to create a drama while escaping pressure.

Overreaction? No.

The 49ers’ desire for greater consistency from the kicking game is not an exaggeration. That’s certain. Only four kickers with ten or more games played this season have lower field-goal percentages than Moody. On field-goal attempts, he is 23 out of 30 (76.7 percent). He has missed every one of them from farther than forty yards. Moody, who was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, was in his second season. There should be no more guarantees.

Moody, who was selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, was in his second season. There should be no more guarantees. The 49ers must treat him equally with everyone they add to the team throughout the summer, even though cutting him now is probably not the solution. He ought to have to compete at training camp to get the job.

Overreaction? Yes.

Has the 49ers decided on Deebo Samuel yet? Most likely not. He appeared to be the Deebo Samuel that we have known for the most of his first five NFL seasons on Sunday. The 49ers are a better team when Samuel gets the ball in his hands and trucks defenders, like he did on his 16-yard touchdown catch on Sunday, even though it did not help them win.

It might go either way. It’s possible that the 49ers will decide that he is a part of the solution for the upcoming season given the uncertainty surrounding Brandon Aiyuk’s recuperation from ACL surgery, the lack of Ricky Pearsall, and coach Kyle Shanahan’s continuous backing of Samuel.
