Lions Players Eye Bonuses as NFL Regular Season Nears End
With the 2024 NFL season winding down, two Detroit Lions players—defensive end Za’Darius Smith and quarterback Jared Goff—have significant contract bonuses at stake as they aim to capitalize on their strong seasons.
Za’Darius Smith’s Sack Incentives
Smith has a lucrative incentive tied to his sack total. If he manages two more sacks this season, he will pocket an additional $250,000. An impressive four more sacks would double the bonus to $500,000. Beyond individual performance, Smith’s incentive is also tied to team success: if the Lions clinch a playoff spot, he’ll earn an extra $250,000 if one of the sack thresholds is met.
Jared Goff’s Super Bowl Bonus
Quarterback Jared Goff’s bonus is tied to the Lions’ ultimate goal: a Super Bowl victory. If Detroit wins the championship and Goff plays at least 50% of the offensive snaps, his 2028 base salary will increase by $1 million. Additionally, Goff could earn a separate $1 million salary boost if he wins the NFL MVP award. However, it appears only one of these escalators can be triggered per season.
A Team That Takes Care of Its Players
The Lions have a track record of prioritizing player bonuses. Last season, head coach Dan Campbell ensured wide receiver Josh Reynolds hit his yardage incentive, describing it as a reward for Reynolds’ unselfish contributions to the team.
With a pivotal “Monday Night Football” matchup against the San Francisco 49ers looming, the Lions are not only focused on securing playoff positioning but also on helping their key players achieve these financial milestones.
