Legendary sports broadcaster Greg Gumbel has passed away at 78 after a brave battle with cancer.

The family’s statement read, “He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer.

Greg approached his illness with stoicism, grace, and positivity, just as we all knew he would.”

For more than 50 years, Gumbel’s voice became synonymous with major sports events.

His calm, steady presence made him a beloved figure for millions of sports fans.

He was a trusted announcer for significant events like the NCAA Tournament, NFL games, and the Olympics.

Beginning in the 1970s, Gumbel’s career took him from NBC to CBS Sports, where he continued to serve as a studio host after returning in 1998.

As the host of CBS Sports’ NCAA Tournament coverage, his absence this year, due to family health concerns, marked the first time since 1997 that he was not part of the broadcast team.
