Condolence Messages

BARRIE SWEETMAN

We regret to announce the untimely passing of Mr. Barrie Sweetman, a distinguished Life Member of Fiji Rugby, earlier this week. Barrie, who marked his 90th birthday in September, was a pivotal figure in the evolution of Fiji Rugby.

Originally from Epsom, Auckland, Barrie relocated to Fiji in 1960 to work with the renowned law firm now known as Munro Leys. His passion for rugby led to his active involvement in the sport, first in Lautoka and later in Suva, where he made lasting contributions to Fiji Rugby. In the 1970s, he joined the executive committee and served as a National selector for nine years. He later became assistant secretary and eventually Chairman of Fiji Rugby, a position he held for ten years. Among his notable achievements was facilitating the purchase of the rugby house, a lasting testament to his leadership.

Barrie’s influence extended beyond rugby into his personal life, where he was a devoted husband to Anna, a loving father to four children, and a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in our hearts.

The Fiji Rugby Union expresses heartfelt condolences to Anna, their children, grandchildren, and all who knew Barrie. His contributions to rugby and the legal profession will forever be remembered. He will be deeply missed.

NASONI ULUVULA

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Nasoni Uluvula, a former Fiji rugby representative who debuted for the national team against Ireland in 1976. Nasoni’s contributions as a national player and captain of the Naitasiri side have left a lasting legacy in the sport and in the hearts of those who knew him.

Nasoni was not only a determined competitor on the field but also a respected leader who guided his team against formidable rivals, including the late Mosese Taga, another Flying Fijian legend. His unwavering dedication, teamwork, and resilience continue to serve as an inspiration to future generations of rugby players in Fiji and beyond.

The Fiji Rugby family extends its deepest sympathies to Nasoni’s family, friends, and loved ones. May you find solace in the treasured memories and enduring legacy he leaves behind. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this time of sorrow.

Vinaka vakalevu, Nasoni, for your invaluable service to Fiji Rugby. Rest in peace, champion.
