Why Dan Campbell Winning NFL Coach of the Year Might Not Be Ideal for the Lions

Dan Campbell, head coach of the Detroit Lions, is a clear favorite for NFL Coach of the Year (COTY) after leading his team to a stunning 13-2 record. However, some argue that it might actually benefit the Lions if Campbell doesn’t take home the award. Here’s why:

The COTY Award’s Unlucky History

Over the past decade, winning the COTY award hasn’t correlated with postseason success. In fact, only one COTY winner in the last 10 years has gone on to reach the Super Bowl. More often, award-winning coaches see their playoff hopes dashed early, with many losing in the Wild Card or Divisional Round.

Additionally, several COTY winners have seen their tenure with their teams end prematurely. Coaches like Matt Nagy, Ron Rivera, and Mike Vrabel were all fired within a few years of winning the award.

The Lions’ Bigger Picture

Campbell has transformed the Lions into legitimate Super Bowl contenders. He’s focused not just on this season’s success but on building a sustainable, competitive team for years to come. Winning the COTY award, while an honor, might add unnecessary pressure or expectations.

Instead of focusing on accolades, Campbell and the Lions are keeping their eyes on the ultimate prize: the Lombardi Trophy.

Is There a COTY “Curse”?

While not a formal curse, the COTY award has a track record of being a double-edged sword. Coaches often face increased scrutiny and higher expectations after receiving the honor, which can lead to challenges in maintaining team success.

Campbell’s True Legacy

Under Campbell’s leadership, the Lions have shaken off their reputation as perennial underdogs. His vision, work ethic, and ability to galvanize his team have made Detroit a powerhouse this season. Whether or not he wins COTY, Campbell’s achievements have already solidified his place in Lions history.

For Detroit fans, the focus remains clear: bringing home the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl victory. If avoiding the COTY award helps the Lions maintain their momentum, many would consider it a worthy t

rade-off.
