The NFL season is nearing its conclusion, and both the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers find themselves in survival mode, albeit for different reasons.
The Lions are focused on staying healthy and prepared for the playoffs, while the injury-ridden 49ers are merely trying to avoid further setbacks as their playoff hopes have already been dashed.
Both teams entered the season with high expectations of repeating their NFC Championship game appearances. However, injuries have plagued both squads, altering their trajectories.
Despite dealing with numerous setbacks, the Lions have managed to maintain their footing, although recent weeks have tested their resilience.
On the other hand, the 49ers have not been as fortunate. Their season has unraveled, and the playoffs are no longer a possibility.
The Lions, currently sitting on 13 wins, have yet to clinch the NFC North.
While Monday night’s matchup carries less weight compared to next week’s pivotal game against the Vikings, Detroit won’t underestimate San Francisco, regardless of their struggles.
Injuries have ravaged the 49ers roster. Key contributors like Brandon Aiyuk (ACL tear), Christian McCaffrey (PCL strain after battling Achilles issues), and Trent Williams (shut down due to persistent injuries) have been sidelined for the season.
This provides a favorable opportunity for the Lions’ defense, particularly for Trevor Nowaske, who often lines up against the opposing left tackle.
Nowaske initially stepped up earlier this season due to injuries within Detroit’s roster and quickly surpassed expectations. Although his impact has lessened as the season progressed, he is poised for a significant performance this week
. Nowaske may not be an explosive pass rusher who dominates plays immediately, but he excels in cleanup duties, aligning perfectly with his role as an edge-setter on the Lions’ defense.
The 49ers’ offensive line situation further compounds their struggles. Backup left tackle Spencer Buford, who filled in last week, is now out with a calf injury.
This leaves backup guard Austen Pleasants as the likely replacement at left tackle, creating another mismatch the Lions can exploit.
Offensively, San Francisco continues to deal with numerous absences. Along with Aiyuk and McCaffrey, FB Kyle Juszczyk is returning from illness, and RB Isaac Guerendo is recovering from a hamstring issue, though neither appeared on the latest injury report.
Even so, both players may not be at full strength. Meanwhile, WR Deebo Samuel has struggled to recapture his previous form this season.
With fewer options, QB Brock Purdy may be forced to spend more time in the pocket, sorting through his reads—an ideal scenario for Nowaske to capitalize on.
San Francisco’s offense has traditionally relied on its elite skill players, but those positions are now their weakest link. TE George Kittle remains their biggest threat, but Detroit’s secondary, strengthened by Ifeatu Melifonwu’s return, boasts three capable safeties to keep him contained.
The Lions defense, which has faced challenging offenses in recent weeks, will likely welcome this matchup.
San Francisco’s depleted offense will struggle to protect its quarterback or gain momentum in the passing game. This sets the stage for Trevor Nowaske to deliver a standout performance,
potentially recording two or more sacks. Such a breakout showing could be instrumental in securing a Lions victory, boosting their confidence as they prepare for a critical Week 18 showdown.
