Lions’ Matthew Stafford Replaces Fan’s Sold Jersey with a Signed One for Playoff Tickets

Lions fan Bryson Machonga sold some of his favorite memorabilia, including a signed Matthew Stafford jersey, to afford tickets for the Lions’ playoff game so he could take his daughter. Although the Lions lost, this story has a positive twist.

The Detroit Free Press published an article about Machonga’s sacrifice, and someone forwarded it to Stafford, who decided to send Machonga a replacement jersey.

Machonga shared that a Rams employee reached out to him, requesting a shipping address to send a jersey from Stafford — not just any jersey, but a game-worn one from Stafford’s 2014 season with the Lions, their best record during his tenure as their quarterback.

“I was overwhelmed…at first in disbelief, but then it turned into pure joy and excitement,” Machonga told the Detroit Free Press. “It truly reaffirmed who Matthew Stafford is.

He had no obligation to do this. He’s not even our quarterback anymore…yet he made the effort during a playoff week.”

Machonga received the jersey with Stafford’s autograph and a personal note that read, “To Bryson-Thanks for all the support.”

It’s clear why Lions fans continue to admire Stafford, as long as he’s not facing the Lions.
